Marry indoors and keep the garden in the picture.
That is the thing I noticed first at Dalmeny Park. The room I married Jade and Grant in has glass from floor to ceiling down one side, and the white bandstand sits just outside it on the terrace, so even with the ceremony indoors the garden is in every photograph. It is a restored Scottish mansion on the south side of Glasgow with its own dedicated wedding team, and a humanist ceremony sits very comfortably in it.
The venue
Dalmeny Park House Hotel is on Lochlibo Road in Barrhead, a restored Scottish mansion set in several acres of gardens and grounds, including a secret garden the hotel recommends for photographs. It offers a choice of indoor and outdoor ceremonies. Indoors there is the Ceremony Suite, with the Jasmine Suite, which has its own private bar, for the reception and the Jasmine Lounge alongside it for drinks. Outdoors, the option is the bandstand, with the landscaped gardens round about it.
Listings put the capacity at up to 180 guests for a daytime ceremony and up to 220 in the evening, with 20 en-suite bedrooms on site, including the Balmoral Suite for the two of you. The room we used had a mirrored ceiling and crystal chandeliers down its length, and it held a big guest list comfortably.
What I would ask about first
The bandstand, if you want it. I could not find a wet-weather plan on the hotel's website, so ask the wedding coordinator early how the move indoors works and when the call gets made on the day. The consolation prize is a good one: from the ceremony room you are still looking straight at the bandstand through the glass.
Then ask about the day of the week. Dalmeny Park runs mid-week and winter packages. Jade and Grant married on a Thursday afternoon, and the room was full. My guide to weekday and off-season wedding savings has the detail.
One tip from the front of the room. Seen from the front, the kiss has the windows and the bandstand behind it, so brief your photographer or content creator to set up facing the glass for that moment. And if you have weans, give them a job. Jade and Grant's daughters held the cloth for a family handfasting, and it was the heart of the ceremony. Getting there
The hotel sits on the south side of Glasgow on the A736, on the edge of the Gleniffer Braes, about ten miles southwest of the city and only a few miles from Glasgow Airport, which is handy if some of your guests are flying in. There is parking on site. Postcode for the satnav: G78 1LG.
