Kill Bill met Hulk Hogan in 2018. It took six years and a moustache to get it right.

Their story

The year is 2018. The scene: a kitchen at a Halloween party. Nadia is in her Kill Bill outfit, and across the kitchen, dressed as Hulk Hogan, is Rob, who cannot take his eyes off her. The only problem is that Rob doesn't remember much of the night. Nadia remembers flirting with somebody she thinks was Rob, but she can't swear to it either, for much the same reason. So did they actually meet? The jury is still out.

For the next six years they kept bumping into each other: pizza pop-ups, birthdays, a trip to Fort William. And all that time their pal Eilidh, who was up at the front as a bridesmaid on the day, kept telling each of them the same thing. You two would find each other hilarious. They did not see it. Rob's theory is that he must only ever have met Nadia when she was hungover.

Every love story needs a turning point, and theirs was facial hair. In May 2024 Rob shaved off the beard and kept the moustache. Word reached Nadia, and her reaction was simply: game on. "Hot, tattoos, moustache, AND Irish? My dreams have come true!" There was one small hitch. Rob lived in Ireland and Nadia lived in Scotland. Then came a friend's 30th, Rob said game on too, and after that they were inseparable every time he was over. That first night, Nadia had him singing "Islands in the Stream".

Then Rob started sending her the Come Dine With Me whisk meme, which she found slightly strange and also intriguing. Their first proper date was a Fontaines D.C. gig, and Fontaines have been their soundtrack ever since. Their motto: you're all in, or you're in the way. Eilidh, it turns out, had been right all along.

Rob works away on rotation, so things moved quickly. Nadia met his mum and his half a dozen siblings in Dublin, and Rob made his first trip to the bold Kilmarnock, fell in love with the place and fell even harder for her family. At his first Killie Christmas he entered the family quiz and, somehow, won it. In his own words: once she survived meeting everyone in Dublin, and he survived his first Killie Christmas, they knew they were all in. He proposed in an olive grove in the Tuscan hills, looking out over Florence under a pink sky, and they celebrated with the worst pizza in Italy at midnight.

The ceremony

A piper played the guests in, then Hazel's playlist took over while Rob waited at the front, handsome and a wee bit nervous. Nadia walked down the aisle with her dad to "Waterloo Sunset" by The Kinks. The ceremony was unplugged, with the phones away and the pictures left to Leanne, so everybody was actually watching.

We held a moment's silence before the vows, and when I asked the families and friends whether they would stand by these two, the "We do!" came back loud from both sides of the Irish Sea. The rings arrived in style with a wee ring-bearer and a hand from his mum. Then I declared them married, they kissed to "Dreams" by The Cranberries, signed the schedule to Johnny Cash's "A Thing Called Love", and walked back up the aisle as husband and wife to "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys.

What they want next is more of the same: a white wine and a Murphy's on a Friday night, karaoke whenever they can get it, and every single morning, Rob's Café open for business, where Rob makes Nadia a coffee.
