Two weddings on the lawn, both under the trees.
Altskeith Country House stands on the shore of Loch Ard, on Lochard Road outside Aberfoyle, inside the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and looking towards Ben Lomond. Its owners bought it in 2012 and have spent the years since turning a tired house into a small eleven-bedroom hotel that doubles as an exclusive-use wedding venue. I've married two couples here, and both times we were outside.
A Monday in June, a Saturday in May
The first was a Monday morning in June 2024. The chairs went out in rows on the lawn in the shade of the big copper beech, with bright flowers tied to the aisle ends and the loch showing through the branches. We had a quaich and a handfasting, and the signing table sat on the grass under the tree.
The second was a Saturday afternoon in May 2025, a handfasting again, with the signing table set under old, moss-covered trees beside the burn that runs through the grounds. Neither day was blue-sky weather, and neither needed to be. Under those trees the light is soft and even, and nobody squints in the photographs. The places I haven't stood yet
Altskeith offers indoor and outdoor ceremonies, and its list of outdoor spots includes a wooden jetty out over the loch. For an indoor ceremony there's the function room, built out of the house's old stores, with big windows looking across the water towards Ben Lomond. I haven't married anyone on the jetty or in the function room, so go and stand in both, and settle early which one is your plan B. The house quotes up to 96 guests for the day and 24 more in the evening, with its own catering, its own bar and a midnight finish. Dogs are welcome too.
Worth knowing
There's no mobile phone reception at the house and no television, though there is wifi. Tell your guests before they arrive, and enjoy the side effect: an unplugged ceremony more or less arranges itself. And check your dates early. As I write, the house says it's taking wedding bookings for 2026 and asks couples planning 2027 or later to get in touch directly.
